Orientation programme organized by the Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Budapest.

Presentation of the work of some Hungarian arts centers and organizations: comprehensive and interesting overview of the contemporary Hungarian art scene, which seems vigorous, radical, outward-looking, and already engaged in a wide range of collaborations with artists and artistic organizations in other countries.

All the members centers of Res Artis and the centers and projects in statu nascendi made slide presentations of their work.

Report on Important Issues

Members’ diversity

The presentation in Budapest was important to let members see what other centers looked like and what their programmes were. Many different kinds of centers were presented, all with their different needs and expectations. There are enormous differences between established residential arts centers and artist’ groups and associations, and even more between such established centers and small projects which need help to get started. It was important for the Association to recognize and work with its diversity. It was especially useful to get information on new projects and residencies.

Different membership categories must be defined. Each category should carry a different dues structure and be represented by a predetermined number of members of the Executive Committee. A group, coordinated by Janwillem Schrofer, discussed the structure of the Association and identified the following initial categories, which should be examined in more detail:

  • Functioning artists residencies
  • Artists’ residencies in statu nascendi
  • Artist’ initiatives and co-operatives, and artists’ organizations, such as unions, associations etc.
  • Financing bodies that subsidize artists’ residencies and exchanges.
  • Advising members, individuals or organizations, whose particular expertise might be relevant or useful
  • People and organizations, such as other cultural networks, to be kept informed.

The classification of membership should allow the creation of “networks within the network” that would be more specific and thus have greater meaning for those involved.

Membership norms

Need to establish clearer membership norms. Necessity of a distinction between full members, who would contribute financially and in other ways to the development of the network, and associate members who would contribute less but would be kept informed of the activities.

The structure group proposed four types of membership, with different membership fees:

  1. Advising members: Financing bodies such as AAFA and UNESCO (membership fee: $500).
  2. Network members: Fully functioning residencies or residential programmes (membership fee: $200).
  3. Associate members: Budding residencies and programmes in statu nascendi (membership fee: $100).
  4. Affiliate members: Other groups, associations, individuals which might be useful to the work of the Association. They would receive newsletters and other information from it (membership fee: $50).
Structure of the Executive Committee

The working group proposed that the Executive Committee consist of:

  • 3 Advising Members
  • 8 Network Members
  • 2 Associate Members
  • 2 Affiliates

This would give a total of 15 or 16 members, each serving a 3 year term.

The current members are: Michael Haerdter, O.P. Jain, Bernard Loughlin, Lori Wood, Bill Smart, Laurens Schumacher, Giusi Daniele, Emmanuelle de Montgazon, and Alain Reinaudo. Vesna Todorovic-Miksic has left the Yellow Springs Institute and therefore is no longer eligible to serve.

It was proposed to add Judy Sale of the Monagri Foundation, Anders Kreuger of the Nordiskt Konstcentrum, Sirje Helme of the Soros Network, Janwillem Schrofer of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst, Peter Grosz of Milkwood International, Gordon Knox of the Civitella Ranieri Centre and Jean-Baptiste Joly of Akademie Schloss Solitude, to give that kind of spread to the membership of the executive committee.

“Kaleidoscope” project

The Advisory Committee of Res Artis had decided to launch a project aimed at supporting and guiding emerging artist-in-residence centers and programmes in the former communist countries of Eastern Europe.

The partners would be the Soros Centers for Contemporary Art and embryonic residential arts centers in eastern and central Europe which might be helped to develop serious programmes through participation in this exchange. Sirje Helme, Director of the Network of Soros Centers for Contemporary Art, will coordinate the partner centers in the East.
